I’VE FOUND that at many Italian weddings, whereas you might expect them to go overboard, the food has actually seemed simpler. It’s as if the food is taking a day off to graciously allow the bride and groom centre stage. I’ve been to weddings where on a hot day a delicious bowl of handmade gelato has been served or we’re offered ripe strawberries to be eaten alongside a glass of prosecco or champagne. The Italians just seem to know what to focus on when it matters. What’s so refreshing is that firstly you know it will be delicious and I’ve found that the simpler the menu the more memorable it is, which was definitely the case when we met Dario Cecchini. Dario is the famous butcher from Panzano, admired by all foodies all over the world from celebrity chefs to members of the Royal Family and he has been a huge success at weddings with his renowned barbeques. His passion and love for what he does is appreciated by everyone and wedding guests obviously have a spectacular time with his laughter and enthusiasm – particularly for the delicious bistecca they find before them.

Since Dream Italian Weddings & Honeymoons began, I have been amazed at the number of brides who’ve told me about their experiences of getting married in Italy and how they just turned up on the day not entirely sure what their bouquets would look like or what hairstyle they would end up with. It’s wonderful that they have such faith, just knowing that whatever the Italians do, it’s always going to be beautiful and elegant. For example, in this issue we meet delightful Lucia Mason, a beautiful bride who tells us about her very special wedding day. It was actually her mum, Anna, who originally told me about Lucia’s day and she was so excited and thrilled about it that I had to find out more. Lucia’s another relaxed bride who arrived in Italy and had her hair cut by the hairdresser on the day of the wedding, having simply said, ‘Over to you’. She said it was the best haircut she’s ever had. It reminded me of a less stress-free time when I was bridesmaid to a very good friend and she and I went to her local hairdresser on the morning of her wedding. My friend turned up, veil in hand, and the salon decided that seeing as I was there I should have my hair done too. To my embarrassment, they spent about ten minutes fixing her veil and then an hour and a half curling my hair. I came out looking like a Shirley Temple – I still remember friends at the wedding singing, ‘On the good ship…’ as we waited outside to have our photos taken. Luckily my friend, with her simple and elegant hairstyle, saw the funny side.
