ROCCA D'AJELLO

History and Romance in a magic setting

HISTORY
Located in the Marche, in the district of Macerata, Rocca d’Ajello is an ancient fortress of the Varano family, lords of the duchy of Camerino between the XIII and the XVI century. Perched on a woody hilltop, it dominates an unspoilt countryside of green rolling hills and mountains. The two towers were built by warrior duke Gentile I in 1260 as part of an important defensive system called “L’Intagliata”. A couple of centuries later, Giulio Cesare, the most important ruler of the Varano dynasty, turned the fortress into a villa by adding a U shaped building that encloses a large courtyard.

GARDEN
In the garden, surrounded by crenellated walls, roses, clematis, shrubs, perennials and bulbs grow everywhere and smother the old stone walls with millions of blooms. In spring masses of wild flowers bring a touch of colour to the lawns. Another garden has been created in the old terraced orchard, where 100 steps lead from the parking lot to the house among a riot of blooms.

EVENTS
The castle is privately owned and can be rented to organize weddings and events. In spring and summer the garden is used for cocktails and aperitifs. From June to the end of August, in the evening, dinner parties can be held in the courtyard of the castle, lit by torches and candles. If it rains or it’s not warm enough for dining alfresco, there are 2 big dining halls that can accomodate up to 220/230 people each, plus an adjacent room for 70 people, all with central heating. The first floor rooms, furnished with antique pieces, can be visited by the guests and can be used for coffee and drinks after dinner. In the playroom, a babysitter looks after the children and makes them play and eat.

FLOWERS
Floral decorations are the work of the house florists, who normally use seasonal flowers, foliage, berries and fruit grown on the estate, but can provide any kind of blooms or colours according to the bride’s wishes. Wicker baskets and glass, terracotta or china containers are used for our centrepieces; garlands, arches and swags frame doors and windows and create a romantic atmosphere.

CATERERS
Caterers are chosen by our customers among a list that includes all the best firms of Central Italy. Visiting chefs will find professionally equipped kitchens for their memorable banquets.
