As you take a look around you today, were sure youll agree that this year the show has truly excelled itself. Stop and take a peek at all the Italian goodies: weve got fashion, food, wine, entertainment, tons of holidays and gorgeous properties for rent and sale. Also, for the first time ever, La Dolce Vita with Viva Italia, with the patronage of The Italian Cultural Institute, has awarded Italys most stylish and finest personalities the Dolce Tributes which recognise outstanding contributions to Italian culture. For those who didnt manage to see the awards ceremony at the start of the show then take a peek at Stand T58 to see who those deserving winners are. All this and more under one big roof with the Italian bustle and vibrancy that we all know and love and there are hundreds of stands with just about everything you could want. Additionally there are a number of exciting events taking place throughout the day, including property and travel talks, Italian music, our ever-popular cookery school, a brand new Wine Academy with expert sessions from winemakers throughout the country, including Bisol prosecco and superb SuperWhites chosen by the Slow Food group in Friuli and some very interesting book sessions hosted by BBC Mondo Italiano presenter Roberto Perrone. If youre thinking about taking a well-earned break to Italy but cant decide where to go, then there are many options from skydiving to a spa weekend and if nothing else, youll definitely come away inspired. If Italian style is up your street, then take a seat at our glamorous catwalk, new for this year, and youll see the best fashion being showcased. Then, when youve seen just what gorgeous things are on offer, take a stroll down our Corso Como where you can buy shoes (take a look at ber-talented shoe designer Isabella Zocchis offerings), handbags, jewellery and home interiors from well-known designers as well as emerging ones. Then relax and indulge in some luxurious beauty treatments and demonstrations from top Italian hair stylists and make-up artists such as Glauca Rossi and Pascal, whos worked with all the stars. Youll find information about where everyone is located on the floorplan (see pages 4-5) along with timetables for events and at the back theres more information about stand-holders to look up when you get home. The history of Nonna Genia's Classic Langhe Cookbook begins long before the publication of its first edition in 1982. Nonna Genia, born Eugenia De Marchi (1864-1950), was the grandmother of Luciano De Giacomi, founder of the Ordine dei Cavalieri del Tartufo e dei Vini d'Alba. De Giacomi, together with the chemist, journalist and psychologist Beppe Lodi, researched and collected the 100 recipes from Alba and the Langhe which are the body of the original cookbook. As John Dickie's fascinating Delizia amply demonstrates, Italian food has enjoyed a cultural imperialism that few other than national cuisines have achieved. Subtitled The Epic History of the Italians and Their Food, Dickie's thoroughly researched book demonstrates that more chefs are in thrall to Italian cuisine than to that of any other nation. Dickie is particularly adroit conjuring up many aspects of Italian culture (hisCosa Nostra was a definitive study of a less cherishable aspect of Italian culture). There the Cattani family produce everything from the easy-to-drink Cortona Sangiovese DOC, to elegant, structured reds such as their Girifalco DOC which is the perfect bottle for lengthy ageing. Also from Tuscany comes Castello di Gabbiano from the hills near Greve in Chianti, whose Chianti Classico, DOCG and Riserva are some of the highest quality of the region. And if youre on the lookout for something different, how about delicious dessert wine produced by the Monks of the Monastery of Camaldoli and aged an impressive seven years in oak barrels, available from Simonas? While Tuscany and Piedmont are still among the best known wine producing areas, other regions are also making a name for themselves and gaining recognition at a world level. Producers Il Feuduccio from Abruzzo make a variety of quality wines, of which their Montepulciano Feuduccio was recently voted one of Italys best wines. Il Feuduccio is also heading another trend in the Italian wine world, that of opening up a B&B as part of their winery so visitors can stay a few days to experience the world of wine production first hand and, in the case of Il Feuduccio, enjoy wine tasting and cooking lessons. Other standholders such as Castello di Gabbiano offer similar packages that are much in demand from Anglo-Saxon visitors. Family-owned Berkmann Wine Cellars are one of the UKs leading independent wholesalers, who offer well-known names alongside lesser-known producers. Its a way of life, of living and breathing, of presenting yourself to others and appreciating and enjoying all that is beautiful. We could discuss whether Italians are born with a more developed sense of the aesthetic or whether they learn it as they grow up, but either way, the sheer joy they extract from a beautiful new pair of handmade shoes or a well-made 32 shirt is palpable. Italian design in the world is a fast-growing business and more than ever the combination of tradition, technology and creativity is proving an unbeatable recipe for success. Designers are turning their skill to just about everything, breaking into new fields and having fun along the way. And the world is sitting up and taking notice. For Italian designer Isabella Zocchi, Italian design is synonymous with excellent quality and creativity. Isabella points out that new generations of designers focus much attention on research and innovation but are nevertheless closely linked to teams of skilled artisans who help them produce their items, ensuring unparalleled attention to detail. A small business perhaps but Marinellas ties have dressed everyone from the Kennedy family to Prince PIRAL Charles and continue to lead the way in an international market. Ever more, Italys simple but superlative food is embraced and emulated world wide. But what is it that actually makes Italian food the best? There are probably as many answers to that question as people you ask. But lets start with the countrys artisan and culinary traditions where every region has its own particular traditions and specialties. PRINCIPATO DI LUCEDIO Think, for example, of the rice produced by the firm Principato di Lucedio from the Vercelli area, who are continuing a tradition of rice cultivation that started in Lucedio back in the year 1400! Olive oil has been made in this area for over a thousand years (our family has some trees that are 400 years old!) and our local microclimate has proved ideal for the production of very high quality extra-virgin olive oil.
