Panettone: Italian Christmas Cake

Topic: Guarda!
Words by Michelle Fabio

Last week when we talked about cioccolata calda, maybe you were wondering what you could eat with it. Well, since it's Christmastime, you can have panettone.

Very loosely described as Italian Christmas Cake (please wipe the images of hard bricks from your mind though!), panettone is something truly unique that comes from Milan but is enjoyed all over the Bel Paese. It's light like a poundcake but chock full of candied fruits, making it nutritious as well. OK, maybe it's not exactly good for you, but if you're in Italy in December or January, chances are good that you'll be offered a piece of panettone, and you wouldn't want to offend your hosts by turning it down, would you?

Panettone cakes are actually quite common as gifts for Christmas, which is perfect timing to enjoy a big slice with prosecco at the stroke of midnight on New Year's Eve. You can otherwise eat it with your coffee or cioccolata calda or even with a bit of creamy mascarpone. Recently there's been quite a bit of talk about making French Toast with leftover panettone, smothering it with an egg and cream mixture and then frying it on a griddle, but I've never seen an Italian do that. Yet.

The following videos are in Italian, but there's very little speaking, and anyway, some things, like baking panettone, are beautifully transmitted solely by visuals. Now watch the panettone process--from the cutting of the "ears" (you'll see what I mean) to their rising before your very eyes to the topsy turvy method of cooling them off.

Have you had panettone? What do you think?

Panettone

Michelle,

Where do you import it from? I want to get some in here in the US? Any help would be appreciated.

Imported panettone in US

I did a quick Google search and found this:

There are surely more, but my next best suggestion is to look in Italian shops and bakeries, especially in Italian markets in cities (if you're close enough to one that has such a thing). If you find some helpful info, please check back in and let us know!

Panettone ..... ummmm buono......

I love panettone and so does all my family.. But I will only buy those imported from Italy as the ones made in Australia (where I live) are too dry and don't have the yummy flavour as do the ones from Italy. Thank goodness delicatessens supply ample and they last. I was bought up on Panettone and totally agree that the fruit one is the best by far..beautiful with champagne and beer.

So delicious, each year at Christmas my sister-in-law from Vicenza sends us a Panettone, last year's was lemon, the year before chocolate, but our favourite is fruit!! Far tastier than the UK fruit cake.

Hi Guys!
Do you know "panforte" and "panpepato" and "ricciarelli", Christmas middleage cakes from Siena?

Panettone

We do get panettone (imported) in Australia. It is also delicious to use to make a bread and butter pudding!

Panettone

Bellezza,

I've tried making panettone before and, though it was ok, it surely wasn't the real deal. Now i see i should have cut "the ears" and how i should have cooled it.

Thanks

Still so proud to see your contributions here!

Panettone

I prefer a slice with a glass of port wine for dessert! But I would like to try making "French toast" with it for breakfast, too. The difficult part is finding it in Idaho, but it's not impossible. Thank you for this story!

PANETTONE

Panettone is my favourite breakfast cake. Each morning I enjoy it with a cup of caffe latte. This time of year I always ensure to keep an extra one or two on hand keep me going for the months of January and February.

I've never had this before but is it like our American "Fruitcake?" Hmmm, I'll have to hunt down a recipe.

Michelle F. (not verified) wrote 3 years 4 weeks ago

yes and no

It's technically fruitcake as there are fruits in a cake, but the Italian version is really light and airy--not like the dense, hard fruitcakes in America you may have had. Hope you like it!

Panetone

I just love panetone. Thanks for posting such and interesting story and accompanying videos. Funny how the guys in the bakery look like they are dressed for winter and not being in a bakery.

Michelle F. (not verified) wrote 3 years 4 weeks ago

good point!

I guess even bakeries are cold here in the winter ;)
