ITALY Writers' Guidelines

Submitting an idea

We are always on the lookout for writing with great images and a strong narrative flow. We are interested in writers who can cover topics with insight, style and conciseness suitable for the web; often this will mean local writers who can express insider knowledge and lend inside perspective to our destination or culture features.

Good writing should express original thought, a tangible interest in the Italian culture and convey a strong sense of place, (but avoiding stereotypes).

We welcome guests bloggers so if you want to feature on ITALY magazine just get in touch.

What we are always looking for:

  • Ten of the Best or similar - (always with accompanying images), with an emphasis on what’s new. For example: ten new great restaurants in Milan; ten stylish new hotels in Sicily; the ten best beaches in Liguria; the ten best value restaurants in Venice (now there’s a challenge!!); the ten best visitor attractions in Florence and how to avoid the queues.

  • Books serialised into articles

  • Destination Pieces with an angle i.e. rather than “A Visit to Rome”, we’d prefer “An insiders Guide to Visiting Rome”, “A Literary Guide To Rome”, “In the Footsteps of Charles Dickens in Rome”, “ Resphigi’s Fountains of Rome” (a walk encompassing the four fountains musically mentioned in the piece), “A walk round the film locations of “Summer Holiday” etc.

  • Unusual Italian crafts and facts that people may not know about

  • Interesting jobs for our ‘Italian Job’ feature

  • Quirky Articles – a piece just accepted was about the three places in Bologna that superstition has it that any student who visits these places will not complete their degrees.

  • Sports features

  • Short fillers (500 words) suitable for the dual language section (we organise the translation)

  • Case studies of people who have made the move to Italy

  • Topical articles on aspects of Italian life people may not be aware of

  • Celebrity and personality interviews

What we aren’t looking for

  • Columns

  • ‘I’ve been to/I'm going to Italy, what would you like me to write about?’

  • Poems, short stories and line drawings

  • Hotel and restaurant reviews (But see “10 of the best”)

  • The story of your house restoration!
